INTRODUCTION
It is a need of the day to popularize Astronomy and Space science in Marathwada region. No such type of center exist in this region at present. The weather condition at Nanded is feasible for setting up an observatory for research as well as observation. This center is to help promoting amateur astronomers for
their observation and to develop scientific temper among common people. Nanded is comparatively a remote place in the interiors of Maharashtra. It is in the Marathwada region which is an undeveloped region of Maharashtra. The existing natural parameters are responsible for this region being deprived of the developments in various sectors of life. But we, as an element of the society , should try hard to overcome the shortfalls and to keep this region in pace with any developed part of the rest of the world. The present proposal is being forwarded with this thought. The center is established with this thought in mind and is named as Mahatma Gandhi Mission's Centre for Astronomy and Space Technology CAST
OBJECTIVES
The main objective of CAST is to provide a centre for excellence for teaching , research and development
in Astronomy and Space Technology. To achieve these objectives CAST will function on several different fronts. The centre will arrange courses as well as advanced level schools and workshops in topics of current research. This activity involves experts from India as well as from abroad. In addition, the Centre will also take up programmes for science popularization.
CAST will be expected to carry on good quality research in astronomy and space. CAST will also encourage undertaking of collaborative research programmes by its core core academic members with scientists in India and other countries.
Other Objectives are
Establishing a temporary / permanent observatory for recording observations pertinent to the above mentioned fields.
To co-ordinate activities, such as, establishing museums and planetariums; administering examinations, essay competitions under professional supervision of national centers and laboratories in the respective fields and award recognition to distinguished participants by way of prizes, medals, certificates, special memberships and the like; publication of the periodicals, monographs and books; conducting exhibitions, sky demonstrations and the like; conducting elementary courses for specializations in the above mentioned disciplines; and any other activities.
